For nearly 100 years, Valois has served the Hyde Park community breakfast favorites like omelets, steaks, pancakes, and potatoes as well as lunchtime must-haves like open-faced turkey sandwiches and the classic Reuben sandwich. Above the counter, the menu is displayed, and as you make your way through the cafeteria-style line, you'll see your food cooked and plated right before your eyes. The casual eatery received a boost in its popularity being named as former President Obama's favorite breakfast restaurant on the south side. He even has his own section in the menu listing his favorite dishes. Valois Restaurant is cash only and sits at the beginning of 53rd Street, so once you finish your meal, you can walk around and shop Harper Court.
As an aside, back when he was a community organizer, Obama used to hold community meetings here. He still visits when he’s in town, and according to the “President Obama’s Favorites” menu orders the steak and eggs.
